I have been downloading MP3s forever, but I've never had to mess with the files I got (mostly 128 bit or better). I just got a Rio 600 and wan to downsize some of my MP3s so i can fit more in the smaller space. Is there a simple way to do this without damaging my original files? Can it be done through iTunes? I'm using OS X almost exclusively, but if necessary i can go down to OS 9.x if that is the only option for achieving what i'm trying to do..

Any help would be appreciated.

Ciao!

I don't think you can do that in one movement. I suppose you will have to convert first to AIFF (there are a lot of programs that do this stuff, ex: Soundapp, aiff dropconverter) and then reconvert to MP3 using itunes or a similar program.
If you want to keep the original, just convert a duplicate of it.

iTunes do this too. Just go to preferences, change the MP3 encoding settings, and use encoder AIFF. Then change it back to the MP3 encoder, and the settings. I assume Rio supports VBR-files, so I suggest you use the highest quality VBR-encoder and set the minimum bit-rate around 80 KBps or something...

Thanks, I'll try it and see what happens... does iTunes for OS X do this too?
