Is there any generation loss when importing from or exporting to Sony Digital 8 tapes?

are you talking about when using the firewire interface, like doing a project in iMovie or FCP, capturing footage from camera, editing, and then transferring back to tape via firewire? if so, there shouldn't be any generation loss as everything is still digital through the firewire. i do this daily at work, and i don't notice any loss.
