I do website upkeep for a band called The Tractors and I just put up Sorenson 3 versions of the new video. I thought you might like to see an example of the quality that can be achieved with Sorenson 3 and QuickTime.

http://www.thetractors.com

Go to the home page and click watch the new video.

Nice work! I have a couple of questions, though. Did you use the developer edition of Sorenson 3, or just the standard edition that comes with QuickTime 5.0.2? Also, did you use Media Cleaner Pro, or just the plain QuickTime Player to compress the movie?

I used the standard edition (sorenson is being a little slow getting my pro one to me) and I used Cleaner 5 Pro. I was having some trouble with the interlaced frames so the ones on the website now are a quick fix. The quality should be better today and then maybe even better on Tuesday as I solve more problems.

Well, I gotta say, I'm impressed!

I do a lot of work with video compression, and none of my Sorenson 2 (developer edition) work at 1 Mbps look as good as your video. Here's a couple examples of what I've done.

St. Mary Reservoir (Apple hosted/Akamai delivered)
St. Mary Reservoir (U of C hosted)
5 Mintues of Fame

I'm also waiting for my copy of Sorenson 3 Developers Edition to arrive, before I started playing around in this version of Sorenson. But, you've got me really excited about it!

(edit: spelling mistake)

Just a couple more questions!

What was the compression time like for you (how long did it take)? And what machine did you compress on?

What watermelons?

About 45 min for the big one and 24 min for the medium one. That seems a little short and if it is wrong I will change it tomorrow. It was encoded on a G4 500 MHz with 768 MB of ram or around that much. It is the computer at work so I don't know the specifics.

Correct me If I'm wrong but I have downloaded the cantlq.mov
from http://www.thetractors.com (the small 56k modem)

But when looking at the data rate (QuickTime Info) I have encountered
15kbyte per sec - thats 15*8 = 120kbit/sec .
I dont thing that will get into a modem pipe!

I went a little over twice for a modem and a little over twice the data rate for ISDN. The Tractors didn't want anything to go up that didn't look or sound somewhat good. What you see as the small version is the smallest they would sign off on. There are so many quick movements that it can really use the extra bandwidth. I am sorry it takes twice as long to see the video.
