Hi,
I have been helped over on the netwroking/airport forum with the issue of sharing an MP3 iTunes library over Airport. Although I eventually managed to get this running I came across another problem which maybe this forum will be able to help with.
Set up -- "home" mac is an iMac running OS 9.1. Other computer is an iBook running OS X.
Initially, iTunes would store the MP3 path name in the library data file in the form "Macintosh HD':'Documents':'iTunes':'etc"
Now - iTunes has decided to also store the name of the computer as well, although this doesnt occur in the path name section. The only thing I can think of that is different is that I have now turned file sharing ON and the iTunes directory is in shared mode.
Why is this a problem? Well, from my iBook running OS X I can either set up a symbolic link to the iTunes data directory on the "home" mac or point iTunes itself at the "home" mac data directory. I can then use iTunes on the iBook in exactly the same way as on the "home" mac and play all the mp3s ... except for the newly ripped ones where iTunes has stored the computer name along with the path name!
When viewing the details of the unplayable MP3 (iTunes cannot find it) the details are something like "XXX.mp3" on volume "Macintosh HD" on server "My COmputer Name". The iBook cannot resolve this although (naively) it should have all the information it needs ("My computer" is mounted, the volume "Macintosh HD" is mounted. The mp3s it can find and play the details show "Macintosh HD':'Documents':'iTunes':'etc". Note that MAcintosh HD is a mounted volume on the iBook.
I am probably being stupid - but to be honest, this should "just work".
