Can you guys give me some ideas on how to do this?! I have a lot of old 8mm and some VHS-C tapes and I would love to have them on Mini DV so I could edit on my G4...
Thanx

look at this thread: http://forums.macnn.com/cgi-bin/ulti...c&f=9&t=001505
for a discussion of devices that'll convert analog to a firewire interface (to hook up to your machine, or a camcorder).
of course, you could always try and borrow someone's DV camera for a week or so (provided it has analog in).

If I remember correctly... you can play the 8mm tapes in a Digital 8 camcorder, which can be directly plugged in via Firewire.
(I still prefer MiniDV over Digital 8 though)

Isn't 8mm a film format? I think you mean Hi-8 tapes can be played in Digital 8 camcorders.
Jeronimo, you can just play your 8mm movie onto a screen and videotape it yourself, or you can send it out to be done professionally. But basically that's all they're going to do! Do a search for "8mm" in this forum and you will see that there have been several discussions already.

i think jeronimo is talking about video 8mm tapes (since he/she also mentions VHS-C).
GreenMnM, you are right: 8mm is also a film format , as was Super 8. In video tape formats, there is Video 8, Hi-8, and now Digital 8.
It's funny, i didn't think anyone on these forums would remember, let alone confuse, Video 8 and 8mm film. Sort of like the first Superdrive (the Sony 1.4 MB floppy drive) and the new SuperDrive (the DVD-R drive in the new G4's).
Back to the topic...in a weird coincidence, i've done quite a few projects transferring 8mm film to digital for editing. Here's my procedure:
Film in 8mm-->project film and video tape projection using Digital 8 camera--->capture from D8 using firewire interface and FCP--> Edit
A Digital 8 camera would do the trick for getting those old 8mm tapes into your G4 for editing, but if you send it back to the camera via firewire, you would be recording Digital 8, not Mini DV. As for the VHS-C tapes, you would have to playback the VHS-C tapes (using either a VHS-C camera or VCR with VHS-C tape adapter) and input it into the Digital 8 camera.
jeronimo, do you specifically need the content to be on Mini DV, or are you just looking for a digital format that you could use with your G4?
