Any suggestions on how to convert Super 8 movies (actual film) to DV? Are their devices that hook a camera to a film projector? What about services?

I have been looking for a solution for the same problem for over a year. I've only found 2 options. You can take your movies to a shop that does 8mm to DV conversions or do it yourself using a projector and filming the projected image using a DV camcorder. I am probably going to use the second method as I'm not going to trust anybody with handling my 8mm movies. Some of them are nearly 50 years old. Plus many of those shops that say they can convert 8mm to DV actually just film the projected image. There is very expensive equipment that will do a more professional job but unless you've got a lot of money to burn it's not a viable option.
If anybody else has a better idea I'd be glad to hear about it.
I'd give my right arm to be ambidextrous.

funny, i just posted a reply in this forum on the topic of getting 8mm to DV, and someone mixed up 8mm with 8mm film. fortunately, i've been doing both for quite some time.

the best way for me is to just project the movie onto a screen or wall, and tape it with a camcorder (i use a digital 8). i actually have this cheapy convertor (it was a gift) that says it converts 8mm/16mm to videotape, but all it is is just a box with a translucent screen (you project the movie on the rear of the screen, and videotape the front). i get better results just projecting on a wall.

yeah, i wouldn't bother bringing your tapes somewhere for them to transfer. like msuper69 said, there is expensive equipment that will do this really well, but most places don't have that stuff. i used to work in a photo lab, and people would bring their super 8 film to be transferred to video tape. we didn't do it in house, so i would send it to another lab, and basically, they would just project and video tape. what really got me was that they charged by the foot of tape, plus our surcharge for sending it out; it ended up being a lot of money to get this done.
