I have heard that if you take the disc out of a DVD RAM, that it will play in a consumer DVD player. Has anybody tried this? Will it work?

It does indeed work. But only with the single sided 4.7 GB or 2.6 GB media disks. And most early generation DVD players aren't compatible with any DVD format other than DVD-Video. Generally, when you look for DVD-RAM media it will identify whether the disk is removable or at least single-sided.
