After reading on the MacNN homepage, I've spent the last few hours trying to figure out what's new about the XL1S. So far I've found 16:9 format (I think that's new, is it?), analog i/o, and new presets. Is there anything else?

The original XL-1 had 16:9 support. What new presets are you referring to?

I also can't find any side-by-side comparisons. From what I've briefly read on Canon's website so far, I can't really see any differences at all.

There are no differences to the camera itself. There is now a 16x manual zoom available as a kit i think. Canon is really dragging their feet on this one. I own an XL1 but the new prosumer Sony PD150's are super nice.
all screens are superwide
