I just encoded the ac3 and m2v files in "Training Day" to .aiff and .mov respectively... what I have now is an issue where the audio file leaves out the music for the Time Warner intro in the beginning and then kicks in to the movie from there. When I try to "add" the .aiff track to the video, I get trailing audio... and you can tell this graphically by the small clip of video at the end of the movie's timeline that passes the paste marker where the audio is inserted. Since I know the exact length that the video passes the audio, can I somehow use that to cut that amount from the beginning of the video since it's just the intro with no sound?

You've got it wrong... the issue is not out of sync audio. If the audio begins at the correct place it will be perfectly in sync... the issue is how to trim the video to the correct starting point. I need *that* kind of help / app...

so you just want to cut out part of the movie? you can move around frame by frame with the arrow keys. when you get to where you want to split the movie, command B will set the selection there, then cut or clear from the edit menu.

why did you put the word sync in the title, just to confuse me?

My bad about the sync.. but after you add the audio, it looks like a snyc issue but it's really not. The exact amount to be cut is needed to make it perfect... and the exact amount is found by simply adding the audio to the video track from the begining and then looking at the space left over from the end marker... the only problem is that the exact space is at the *end* of the track instead of the beginning (where the video track needs to be cut... the beginning of the video, the little time warner intro, that is...) In other words after you add the audio, it looks like the audio track is simply too short, but in reality it starts at the beginning of the movie and for some strange reason cuts the time warner intro music at the beginnig... so the audio is off for the exact length of time that the time warner intro lasts at the movies beginning. And it fades in and out so I can't simply cut the inrto out... for fear of removing some of the time and then losing sync... but, I have the *perfect* amount of time shown by the gap of space shown at the end of the video track that is marked in light gray after the marker gaps that show that I've added the slightly too short audio to the beginning of the video track... instead of the entire video track being encompassed by the pasting of the audio track and then therefore being totally between the two markers... So basically I've got the perfect amount of time to work with... but it's at the end of the movie... and when I simply try to "shoot from the hip" and add it just past the time warner intro, it never gets perfect... infact I'm usually off by almost an entire conversation... so I can't really use QTmutator to adjust things. What a headache! Any other suggestions? So basically, I need to push the audio track forward just enough so that it ends flush with the movie and that meaning there will be no sound in the beginning of the movie... during the time warner intro...

so basically what you have is exactly a sync problem. Here are the three steps I forsee you following here.
1. Add the audio at the beginning of the movie (already done I assume). In QT Mutator, look at the duration of each track, subtract the audio from the video (this will be your magic length that the video passes the audio). Set the Audio track's offset to that number. Then if everything syncs up, you're done. You can also cut off the TW intro to save megabytes, but if you're using aiff audio, I don't think it will help much.
2. Since you were off by whole conversations when estimating, and the intro can't be all that long, I'm guessing things won't just work out by getting the offset right. Go back to the first part in the movie where you can match the audio to the video (usually a conversation, but sometimes a sound effect is first) and adjust the offset of the track that is ahead until they match up. Now go to the end of the movie and adjust the duration of the video until they match up. Now depending on how far into the movie the first section was, you may have to fine-tune the beginning again.
3. By now, you may or may not have noticed that this is just what was in Blibbler's tutorial. Just go read it there (something about checking the middle of the movie is about all that's left). Sometimes the two tracks just don't line up throughout the whole movie, and you have to do some cutting and adding in quicktime to give you different sections to adjust in different ways.

oh yeah, I like to sound like I know what's going on (what with telling you what your own problems are), but if I still don't get it please try to set me straight
