Okay, proceeding first from the premise that I am a newbie idiot who doesn't know sh*t when it comes to Mac, here's my question, which I hope someone will take pity of me and answer;

I download an .avi video file; it seems to be formatted for realplayer; I run it; realplayer says it need to look for or get some additional files or something from the web; it looks; doesn't find; comes back and says it can't run the file. My Q; What do I have to run an .avi file then? I mean, this format has been around since Gates was a choirboy. Are Mac users locked out of viewing these?

The AVI really means nothing. It's the same as a QuickTime movie, etc. What you need to view AVI's or QuickTime movies is a player (I prefer QuickTime) and the right codecs (compressor-decompressor) to view the movie. Your AVI movie could be compressed using the Sorenson, Cinepak, or Animation codec, and your computer will need to understand how to play the file (needs the right codec). So, I would suggest opening the file in QuickTime first, and see if it plays or whatnot. If that doens't work, then try perhaps Windows Media Player and see if that plays the file for you.

There are a variety of avi codecs. You can find some on Version Tracker. Just search for AVI.
