I noticed on the news article (http://www.macnn.com/news.php?id=3441) comments someone mentioned that Sorenson 3 comes with it. Is this true? That would be SO COOL! Any tests that could be reported on would be much appreciated.

The quality of Sorenson 3 (and speed of encoding) certainly seems impressive until I had a look at the file and realized it cranks out video at a constant bitrate of 1MB/sec. Checking the "limit bitrate to --- Kbytes/sec" export option has no effect whatsoever on the actual bitrate output. This also explains the speed -- it is much easier for the software to encode at a constant bitrate than at a variable rate. I know, I know... still beta.

I don't think the basic edition of Sorenson 3 included in this preview release will do VBR. The limit bitrate control seems to have no effect in this beta release unless you use it in conjunction with the keyframe control. Enter the maximum keyframe number (9999, I believe) and the encoding will honour the bitrate setting. It still seems very quick compared to Sorenson 2.

Using Cleaner 5, I was able to do a basic bitrate limit. I can assure you all that Sorenson 2 (basic bitrate limit) is put to utter shame by Sorenson 3 (basic bitrate limit). In addition, Sorenson 2 (single pass VBR encoding) offers quality on par (sometimes better, sometimes worse) with Sorenson 3 (basic bitrate limit). I can't wait for the pro version of Sorenson 3 to hit the shelves! I'll post some example pics in a bit.

Here's one of the screenshots I promised earlier.
Code:

(Due to a bandwidth scheme protection I have set up, you must paste this link into a new browser window. Following it as a link won't work. There are an awful lot of people who like to link our files directly from their sites. -_-)
It compares:
Sorenson 2 Pro (basic bitrate limit)
Sorenson 2 Pro (single pass VBR encoding)
Sorenson 3 (beta?) (basic bitrate limit)
I set the bitrate the same on all three clips, but VBR clips always seem to come out a bit under the set bitrate...
Anyhow, other than the codec and bitrate limit type, all three clips were encoded from the same high-action DVD source video with identical settings.

Nice comparison! Sorenson 3 is going to do wonders for 56k streaming. What about at 30fps and fullsize? I'm curious about the filesize relative to Sorenson 2. (I'd do the test myself, but I've lost to ability to properly encode sorenson at 30 fps! Can't figure it out - used to do 720x480 @ 30fps, but now it's more like 2 fps).
