noticed that after upgrading to QT 5 Pro I cannot use the copy / paste functions in many movies that I used to be able to edit with QT 4 Pro. Have tinkered with settings and such to no avail. Is there a means of locking these movies now that didn't exist prior to the introduction of QT 5 Pro ?? If they are locked, is there a means of un-locking them with QT 5 Pro ??

did you buy a new key for qt5? qt5 accepts old qt4 keys but all it does is stop nagging about upgrading. Make sure your registration says 5.0 pro player edition

Hi.

For some reason there seams to been a change in the "code" which means you can`t edit mpeg in QT5....you`ll need QT4?!

Anyway, picked this up at the Apple support forum for quicktime.

Is it possible to have both QT4 and QT5 installed?

Did you buy your Quicktime Pro key for QT4 or QT5. If you bought it for QT4, it probably doesn't work anymore even though it doesnt tell you that. You'd need to buy a new key.

yes, I have the QT 5 Pro version and yes I obtained a new key . . .duh!

The question stands, why can I edit some movies and not others? Both types play just fine so no codec issues.

This is true on multiple machines with QT Pro installed and new keys for each. All running OS 9.2.2

tomra had a good point. I could edit MPEG's in QT4 but not in QT5. Actually, you can still mess around a little by selecting things manually and then dragging the picture to another player window, but it's awkward. So, are the movies you can no longer edit all MPEG? And the rest are QT .mov or .avi?

thanx for the suggestions. It looks like QT5 can't deal with MPEG1 MUXED files. Not worth going back to QT4 for this. I just find this 'improvement' frustrating !

I think the main reason why QT5 Pro took out the ability to edit MPEG files is b/c it never was really able to edit them in the first place. I used QT4 Pro before and when I cut and paste from an MPEG, demuxed or not, the new file will result in a file size as large as the original. All QT4 Pro really did was to limit what I saw/heard to the part I selected. QT5 Pro's inability to do so is less misleading. Though, I'm currently having problems saving combined large sized MPEG audio and video with QT5 Pro. I can save a dependent file, but not a standalone file. Not sure if there's a file size limitation.

For a platform that's supposed to be so "digital hub" savvy, we're certainly taking a few steps back on this one.

In QT 5 "pro" under OS 10, you can only edit (cut and paste) .mov -- not ANY flavour of mpeg. If you export mpeg->mov in order to be able to edit, there's a big drop in quality and lots of wasted time, regardless of your settings.

In QT4 "pro" under OS 9, you "can" do it, but a 1 minute segment cut out of a 90 meg .mpg still weighs 90 megs.
