I'm looking for some nice atomic bomb explosions. Does anyone know where to go to get this type of footage? I've searched but can't seem to find a website. I should be able to get it for just the cost of making a VHS copy since it's public domain.

Try http://www.loc.gov/ . They are building a huge History website for students.
