When I edit scanned pics in photoshop or the like, many times I hear from friends that they are unable to view these pics (I scrupulously tag ".jpg"). What's the deal? Do they need P/S to view them b/c they're created w/ that app? Any workaround? Thanks

Do you have spaces in the names? I think that sometimes screws up the PC readers. Use underscores instead. I name all of mine wo/ spaces and it always works. Either that or your friends are clueless and don't have any way of viewing jpegs.

Are you saving these files as JPEGS? Or are you just tagging the .jpg on the end of the file? If you look at the icon for the file you saved (if you get rid of the custom one) you should see letters on the photoshop file. Make sure you Save As and then select JPEG from the list you are given. If you don't see that option, then you need to make sure your image is flattened (only one layer) and that it is in set to 8bits/channel (Image : Mode). If you have any channels, you'll have to remove those as well.

Save the JPEG at level 7 compression (at the minimum). I usually use Level 9, but I have a fast connection.

Remember to save your original as a photoshop document and then save a copy as a JPG (open a copy or just use SAVE A COPY instead of SAVE AS).

If you use Photoshop 6, you can use the Save For Web option to preview different levels of JPEG compression. Enjoy.

THanks for your replies. Yes, saved as jpeg format, usually at 7 or higher, flat (I think?), no spaces in the names (All great suggestions, BTW). I wonder if the P/S icon is the problem. Can I use a generic icon for them? I'm not sure how to do that...
Thanks again for your replies.

Get Info on the file. Click on the icon in the top left. Press delete (or EDIT : CLEAR).
