I finally gave up on several needed OS X software drivers (camera, ZIO, webcam...), and bought a firewire DV camera (Canon Elura2) that can act as a regular digital camera and a webcam as well. It's beautiful- no drivers, iMovie sees it, Oculus sees it... like the Mac should be.
Then a friend sent me a command line app that lets you actually back up data to the video tape (!?!).
Just curious, what other software is out there? Any recommendations? Getting still images off the tape is still a little awkward.
Thanks.

interesting....
but I guess it says about 13gigs per hour tape...
Which isn't bad... but for those of us with DVD-R's... 4.7gigs/Disc is prob more convenient and not much more expensive.

It's a feature I doubt I'll use, but who knows.
That gadgets like this, and for that matter, the new iPod, end up having hidden functionality definitely makes life interesting.

Don't trust this with important data.
DV tapes use a massive amount of error-correction/compression. Your data would likely be corrupted. There are differences between DAT and DV tapes...

honestly, I've never been fond of any tape backups. we had a system at an agency I used to work at many years ago, and it would take a couple of hours to tell you it couldn't restore a file.
Never again, at least not for archiving. But regarding the camera, it might be useful in some instances.

hi jblakeh1
you got me thinking and messing around with my elura 2 to try to make it work as a webcam and it seems like taking the tape out of the camera will allow you to bypass the 10 minute sleep shutoff. i was happy about this until an hour later i went to disconnect it and found the camera to be very warm. last thing i want is to 'burn out' my little elura

if it puts your mind at ease, my came with a sticker that said it is 'supposed to get warm.' I've found that the quality of images I get from oculus seem to be a little better than any other software I have. I am really liking this camera, though. The design is a home run.
