per the 1.1 fine print, you need 9.1 to burn to an external drive.
that's crap! has anyone tried it with 9.0.4?

Well, I'm running 9.04 with a QueFire 8x4x32x drive (not sure of the mechanism). I have turned off the Toast extensions and it doesn't recognize the drive. I'm assuming this is because I am not running 9.1. I'd like to hear from others to see if we can get a concensus.

It works with 9.0.4 and my external USB Que. According to the readme, 9.1 is only recommended.

There's an item on this on today's MacFixit home page. Apparently
there are some serious problems arising and being dealt with.

i can confirm that iTunes 1.1 will burn using 9.0.4...although i cannot get discburner to run (DiskProxyLib not found error) i think this means the disc burner extension is not loading...to burn in 9.0.4 you will need the files:
Authoring Support 1.0.2,
Authoring Support Files (this is the folder which contains the newly supported drives), FireWire Authoring Support..
(i had to install itunes 1.1 on a mac running 9.1 to get these files {they will not install on a mac running9.0.4})...
place these extensions in the extensions folder...and remove all Toast extensions.
note-without Toast or DiscBurner i cannot burn data cd's
note-burn in background seems to work

I have a question. Is DiskBurner or whatever it's called capable of burning with an external drive? I don't want to install iTunes if it means I have to keep turning my toast extensions on and off.

I could not get the itunes installer to install the authoring software on my computer with OS 9.04. I installed it on a different computer with 9.1 and copied the authoring extensions into the 9.04 system folder and everything seems to working ok. it's strange that apple would impose such strict OS limitiations.

more info...
after much trial and error...i was able to get DiscBurner / itunes to work perfectly in 9.1, though Disc Burner will NOT work under 9.0.4...so i really see no reason to to disable toast under 9.0.4, your just limiting your self to audio cd-r's...

to use discburner running 9.1 :
extract these files using TombViewer from the discburner download:
Finder 9.1.1...place in system folder (don't forget to back up your current finder)
DiscBurner Extension...place in extension folder in system folder
Disc Burner application...place in utilities folder in "applications (mac os 9)" folder
restart.

I also got iTunes to work in 9.1 with my Que! Fire 8x4x32 firewire burner. I also was able to get DiscBurner to work buy following the instructions on www.macfixit.com. I had to create an extension
set to use Toast with Conflict Catcher but I am thrilled with DiscBurner. With these two programs Apple has hit a home run. Best of all they are free.

System: iMac266 with 256 memory and Sony Spressa USB 4x2x6 CD-RW (1st gen). I have Toast 4.1.2 installed.

Upgraded to 9.1 from 9.0.4, installed iTunes 1.1, rebooted--not a hitch nor hiccup. iTunes recognized the Sony burner--I didn't have to remove/disable Toast extensions.

As I'm typing this post, I'm burning in the background--slowly but surely (probably at 2x)--I wish there was a "time remaining" window (or am I missing something?).

(tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick, tick)

Finished and the completed CD's mounted on the Desktop; it plays flawlessly. Pretty cool. I've downloaded disc burner but have yet to install it.

I am stupidest when I try to be funny.

The trouble with using disc burner instead of Toast is that you now can't make copies of CD's without first RIPPING them via iTunes and then writing the MP3 files in audio format.

This takes longer and the quality is not as good.

It's a pity Apple have not allowed you to drag a CD's contents on to the CD in the writer and then the software makes an Audio version.

Maybe it will come ? Other wise, it's back to Toast for CD copies :-( but Disc Burner for everything else. What a pain, no single solution.

Disburner will not work with 9.0.4 becuase it requires an update to the finder. Specifically, it updates the finder to 9.1.1, and requires all the extentions and back-end reworking that came with 9.1.

Sorry, the link is: http://www.macfixit.com/archives/feb...#itunes2-02-22

1.Download iTunes 1.1 and Disc Burner 1.0.
2.Install iTunes 1.1.
3.Do not reboot after iTunes finishes installing (this is only an optional time saver)
4.Extract the files "Disc Burner", "Disc Burner Extension", and "Finder" from the Disc Burner installer tome using TomeViewer. The tome (named "Tome") is located in the Disc Burner disc image, going inside (in order) the "Installer Files" folder, into the "Disc Burner" folder, finally into the "Installation Files" folder.
5.Remove "Finder" from the System folder (to the Trash or desktop or wherever).
6.Place the "Finder" extracted from the Disc Burner tome in the System folder.
7.Verify the System folder has been "blessed" by this new Finder.
8.Reboot and burn away!

However, now I can burn Audio Cd's but when I try and do a data disk using disc burner it says it can't because the startup disk is full?
