I am just starting to play with encoding a DVD I own. I want to compress it to under 700 megs to get it on a cd for my laptop. The DVD is already extracted to .mpv files and the audio is ac3 (serveral chapters). I tried to encode a chapter using 3vix and VOP, and the results varied. The VOP file had the best quality, but the file was still huge. A 150 meg .mpv came out to about 100 megs. I tried 2 different 3ivx files, 1 at high quality (came to 80 megs) and one at 75 percent quality. The high quality was ok, but not as clear as the VP3 one, and the 75 percent one looked terrible. What is the best way to encode for the smallest size file, but good enough to watch full screen? My brother showed me a Monsters Inc. DivX encoded file that was about 700 megs, and looked excellent on my 19 inch monitor full screen. This is what I'm trying to achieve. I've heard DivX is way better than a VCD. Also, is Quicktime Pro fine for putting all the DivX and .mp3 files together for one single file? My DVD is around 4.8 gigs. Any ideas? Thanks!
