Video Editing for USB-only iMac

My iMac is USB only, so I don't have firewire or iMovie.

If I recorded something with a video recorder (and the one I have access to is from the early 1980s), can I transfer it to my computer and edit it (add music, transitions, etc.)?

What software will allow the editing and what (if any) hardware do I need to get the video into my iMac? How do I get the finished video "out" so I can play it on a VHS tape via VCR?

Can I also get an idea of how much hard disk room is required for editing (eg., how many minutes of video will 10 GB hold? 20 GB?). If I don't have enough room to load the whole movie, can I work on segments at time?

I am completely new at this, so any links, resources, tips, etc., would be much appreciated.

20 gigs will hold about... an hour of footage? Not really sure. That's in the PAL DV format - 720*576 resolution. Your camera is different.

You would need, hardware wise, something to output from the camera to; then a USB dongle. Something like a USB reciever card may do this job fine, but... USB is awfully slow. Expect either shitty quality, or dropped frames. Or likely both.

Software wise? The appropriate software for the TV thingy, at first, then something like iMovie to edit it.
