This is a wee bit off topic, but I use Macs for all my photo & video work as well as the publishing day job :-) I'm also pondering just what sort of mobile Mac-based setup to use while travelling around. Is there an Aussie dialup ISP that I could access anywhere in the country with my PowerBook?
Can anyone suggest films on and about Australia and New Zealand? I'm fairly well versed on many of the directors that one encounters in the US: Peter Weir, Jane Campion, Bruce Beresford, Peter Jackson, Baz Lurhmann, George Miller. What else is out there on DVD? Can someone suggest a Aussie cinema primer or ten "must see films"?
Sometime toward the end of the year I'm taking a month's sojourn to Australia and New Zealand to follow my girlfriend who's taking a survey of aboriginal art (and who will be there from July 2002 through the Spring of 2003 bumming around taking odd jobs).
Since I'm taking a leave of absence from my corporate day job, I need to make the trip a productive one as well. I went to the School of Visual Arts in NYC with a concentration in film production. These days I manage textbook production for a large publishing company in New Jersey. I'm getting VERY anxious, though, to get back to film either through documentaries or journalism.
At the moment I'm casting about for some project ideas. Since I'm unfamiliar with the country, I wonder if anyone has a direction or suggestion or idea to cast my way. I've been thinking about:
-- A series of essays on Australian film involving interviews, photo-essays, etc?
-- A DV documentary?
As you can no doubt tell, my scattered thoughts run in no particular direction. The imminent reality of the trip recently struck me and I'd appreciate any thoughts or tips -- or even an internship (place to crash, etc) while I'm there -- I'll also accept donations in the name of love ;-)
Thanks for the ideas ...
Australia celebrated Anzac Day this past Thursday in memory of the disaster at Gallipoli. The passage of some fifteen years dims my memory of the Peter Weir film although I’ll never quite forget Mel Gibson’s shattering final run.
