the way i understood it was that Apple's osx dvd player is software baised... which leads me to believe that the graphics card is irrelivent.

my question is then what do you need to play a dvd on a mac? i seem to remember the there were g3 400mhz that worked, but i am not sure. if that is the case, is it possible just to add a dvd rom drive to my imac (revb) now that i have a 400 mhz upgrade in it. obviously it would have to be a laptop drive, but i would be interested in trying.

There's someone in my head but its not me...

The only thing that makes it software based is the fact that the MPEG2 streams are decoded using software instead of hardware. The responsibility for much of the processing required to take a decoded MPEG2 stream and convert it to something viewable is delegated to the graphics hardware; pre-Rage 128 graphics are just not up to the task.
