Hi all,

I have a G3 400 with QT 5.0 and WMP 7.0 and for some reason cannot ply avi or asf files. Will someone please give me a link to some software or give me some ideas here on why I can't play these formats?

Also does anyone know what an .r file is?

For zip files - do I need winszip for mac or something?

Thanks in advance.

BTW, love my pismo. javascript: x()

Here's a link for Mplay multimedia player for your avi s. http://www.versiontracker.com/morein...032&db=mac

Zips can be opened using Stuffit an a mac.

Judging by your questions. Im guessing these files came from some shady place, so I'd leave the .r file alone for now. Unless someone tells you different.

Are you sure it's not supposed to be ".ra" or ".rm"?
Those are RealMedia files (for use with RealPlayer).

a ".r" file (assuming it isn't a ".ra" or ".rm" file is in a rar file.

Rar is a segmented compression utility often used by PC's to compress and split large files. I have heard that there is a program called MacRAR that can decompress them on a mac, but I have never tried, and have no experience handling them on a mac.

Quicktime 3 and up "understand" the avi format so you do not need a different player but instead need the codec (COmpressor/DECompressor) for the avi in question. If the file opens in Quicktime Player when you double-click on the file icon then do the following:

When you get an error message about missing software, click on "OK" Then open Movie/Properties/Video Track/Format. You will see the required codec listed. If it is I263 there is no way other than a software PC emulator or hardware PC card to view it on a Mac as there has never been a Mac version released by Intel.
You also may find Indeo 3, 4 or 5 as the compressor. You need the one specified as they are not backward compatible. 4 and 5 are available
from the Apple Quicktime site. Indeo 3 should already be installed with QT5.
If it is DIV3 or MP43 then you need Windows Media Player 6.3 and the
Mac DivX Player. WMP7 will not work. See http://www.mac.st/ for the
Player and a link for WMP6.3
If it is DIVX then you are again out of luck without an emulator
or PC card as the OpenDivX codec for Mac does not play what are referred to as DivX4 movies. It only plays ones encoded on a Mac with what is really
DivX4 version .4 or something like that. The OpenDivX project has not
yet released a Mac codec that will play DivX4 clips.

...unless you have OSX in which case you can just download and install the DiVX for X quicktime component and play the files nativly in the Quicktime player. There are several other Divx related tools available for OSX as well.

StuffitExpander handles .rar files!

As for the .avi: get the codecs Indeo3, 4 and 5 (will play common avi-files in QT), furthermore DivX-player and WMP 6.3 (not 7) will play DivX encoded avi. For the .asf I'm not shure; maybe you have to get MPEG4 codec from Microsoft to see them.

I too am miffed by not being able to play movies from "shady places"! But what I have found is this- .asf play on window media player 7 - with no problem. Just dl WMP 7.01 and once opened the player will search for the right codec and volia movie time! But like I said, I am totally miffed by files that have .avi after them that just don't work. In fact, QT says "no such codec is avaliable on thier server"
Perhaps the clue lies when downloading the file? Could the file type get changed during downloading and some how mess the identifer up? From www.3idx.com you can download an extension for quicktime (for divx) and also this program called "fix movie filetypes application" but unfortunatly, they did not include this application in there latest download package. Does any one out there have it?

If so could you email it to me kalnoki@yahoo.com? Thanks.

That's another codec, it doesn't decode the "normal" .avi!

it doesn't decode any avi

3ivx has nothing to do with divx, except from an algorithmic point of view. It's quite unfortunate that the names are so similar. I guess they did that so people would pay them more attention...

and ckohler, I don't think that divx quicktime component can read divx 4.0 movies, if that's what you were implying (feel free to prove me wrong, though)
