Quicktime 4.1 makes iMac crash

I have a rev. A iMac with 160 RAM, running OS 8.6, and after I downloaded version 4.1 of quicktime it would no longer start up properly. After all the extensions loaded up it would freeze on me. But if I removed the desktop picture everything would be fine. I've tried starting up with several different pics, but it crashes every time so the photos can't be corrupted or anything. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Or know what I could do to fix this. I've also tried reinstalling the upgrade several times, but this also has no effect.

Are all the pictures you have tried of the same format? .gif .jpg .bmp or pict?

Do you have VM on/off?
I really dont know what it could be. This bugs me, since I have done everything to my Mac to find out what can go wrong. Ok almost everything. Since I like QT 3 (Older Mac) an have only used 4 for a couple of months, I cant really sugest much. It could be a extension or control panel conflict. Go to your extension manager, save the set you have and restart in MacOS original mode. If you still have a problem then it could be a bug in QT 4

I have VM turned off, and it doesn't seem that the format of the pic really matters... I've tried .jpg, .pict, .gif, etc. and it still doesn't start up properly. I've tried posting this topic on the Apple forum, but didn't get any useful replies.

i haven't seen any of the troubles you've had on two revA iMacs owned by friends, so i do not have anything concrete for you...

but, i think that_maybe_you should think about deleting a bunch of pref's files. i know it is a 'shotgun' approach to the probelm but try trashing these files:

Apple Menu Options Pref's
AppSwitcher Pref's
ASLM Pref's
Desktop Pictures Pref's
Display Pref's
Energy Saver Pref's
Finder Pref's
MacOS Pref's
QuickTime Pref's
System Pref's

and restart. try it, it can't hurt

oh , and Memory Pref's too

Is anybody running Premier 5.0 (ie: without the 5.1c updates) because it appears to corrupt the QT Player (causing the first opened movie to appear without colorsync correction) so if you open the same movie a number of times on screen, the first will appear brighter and bluer than the others. I haven't recorded what other harm it does, but I did have to reinstall 4.1 on a number of machines and update Premier!

I add to wlonh's list delete your Colorsync prefs/calibration aswell!

PS - You may be running more than one type of calibation KPCMS (Kodak Precision Color) comes with a lot of scanners etc. There will also be Colorsync 2.5.1 (Which QT Uses) Turn off and/or remove/delete one of them (KPCMS)

thanks... I'll delete those prefs files and see what happens. I have Photoshop 5.0, which I think installed a color calibration extension like you mentioned, I'll turn that off too to see what happens.

One more thing that I forgot, I'm not running any version of Premier

Check to see if you have an extension called "Appearance Extension" (probably 1.0.2) if you have, turn it off as the appearance controls of 8.6 are controlled by an EXTN just called "Appearance". It may have been installed by QTVR of if you downloaded some of the Quicktime Freebie developer tools (many of which are actually quite old, aimed at QT3).

PS. - So much for the Premier theory!
