Background export in iMovie2

When I am exporting a movie to iDVD in iMovie2, I want to do something else, like read these wonderful forums, but whenever iMovie is in the background, it goes really really slow. I tried renice to see if I could bump the priority, but it had no effect.

Any ideas?
signatures are a waste of bandwidth
especially ones with political tripe in them.
