How come you still need to "Doctor" your divx files before viewing them correctly in QT 6? Plus the playing window still randomly jumps when you click in it, as if you had dragged it when you have not. Seems like they forgot to fix the problem when they came out with this update. But that divx thing, how come? I wanna just be able to double click my avi's and watch them no problem.

AND!!!!

On multiple monitor set up, on QT 5 you could watch a movie full screen on one monitor, and use the other monitor(s) fine, but on QT 6, when you click on one of the other monitors, the full screen goes back to a window!!! that SUCKS!!!

I've used the Divx Validator on a couple of .AVIs, and while they're technically playing under OSX/QT6, the framerate is about 2FPS on my Cube/450. My P3/800 starts them faster, plays every frame, searches faster and keeps the A & V synched better.

I hate it when Windows does something better than my Mac.

DivX files are all based on Microsoft's implementation of MPEG4v3 (an old pre release version) mixed with MP3 audio. It works differently and isn't official ISO MPEG4 (files end with .mp4 or .mov) which QT6 uses. I find the DivX plug-in works quite nicely under Quicktime in Mac OSX and DivX doctor gets the sound working nicely though.

VLC is a great app. How come Apple can't get QT6 to play files like this?

why should they? someone else already has and apple has it's own official, standards compliant MPGEG-4 codec

it is my understanding that it is sloppiness on the windows side that allows non standard audio to be wrapped into the avi wrapper. not really sure. do a search in the forums for postings by Uncle Skeleton or lucylawless. he has written a pretty good FAQ on the subject.

I think I read somewhere that the reason us Mac users need to use programs like DivX Doctor is because there is a bug in Windows Media Player, and DivX files are made to work with this program. So, to use them on our Macs, without this bug/glitch, they need to be repaired. Or it's something similiar to that. And I agree with everyone else who recommends vlc. It's so much easier to just use this program and forgot those DivX Doctor programs.

Yes its easier, but the 3ivx codec looks nicer... but with the sound sync issue.... If see a Charlin Chaplin Divx, you´ll have no problem!

uh, yes and no. nothing on that page contradicts the claim that divx 4/5 is based on MSMPEG4v3 (conceptually and historically, not programatically, although that claim is not dismissed on that page either). And we all know that MSMPEG4v3/DivX ;-) 3.11a is what inspired the OpenDivX/Project Mayo folks in the first place, to make a codec that while not dependant in code, was compatible in practice.

and no one ever claimed divx files were supposed to be mp4 compliant. the problem is that they pretend to be avi compliant. And yes, there is a bug in WMP for windows that allows vbr mp3 audio in avi files to play, and that is what allows divx files to propagate, and also that QT does not have this bug that allows mp3 audio in avi files. On the other hand, it's always best to be tolerant of error in a playback app...

but it's a fool's errand to try to correct six-month old posts on an internet message board. what was your point, 'goldplata', in reviving this thread? you obviously know how to play your files, and you know that the divx codec is not the problem, it's the sound codec that's missing...
