Sorry if this is a stupid question, but I cannot play MPEG movies once I installed OS9. I thought that quicktime 4(not pro) which comes w/ OS9 would play them...in my case this is not so.

I've searched for a shareware mpeg player at download.com but have not found one.

ANy ideas, recommendations?

I know this is a stupid question and i'm probably overlooking the obvious.

Thanks

Robert

Some MPEG formats are not supported by the QuickTime MPEG Extension.
Namely, if they are originally taken from VCDs and such (the .DAT format).
There's a utility that will convert from the .DAT to the QT-supported .MPG format, so see if this will help (just drag'n'drop the file onto it). http://www.columbia.edu/~ao107/CDXA2MPEG.sit

I have been able to view VCDs on my iBook OS9 using QT4 with no major problems. I started QT4, then went to File, Open Movie and selected the movie I wanted to view and selected Convert. It opened StarWars Episode I and played it like a champ except for the tiny iBook speaker which sounded terrible.

Hope this helps,
Nathaniel

QuickTime supports playing MPEG-1, but not MPEG-2 (and never has. If QT 4 will not play MPEG files that played before, then something is wrong with that installation.

First, make sure that all QuickTime Extensions are enabled in the Extensions Manager.

If that doesn't work, download the full 4.1 installer from the web, trash all the QT extensions and reinstall.
The low-end Mac Pro is the most overpriced Mac since the IIvx

I was very interested in this utility, only to find out that every file it creates crashes my QuickTime player, and in turn the entire Mac.

Any similar tools people know of?

Ok, i'm not sure if these files my friends send are mpeg 1 2 or whatever, (i'm not sure they know either). All i know is that they are viewable on their PC's (i.e. not mpeg 1 which is a mac format???)

so what out there views mpeg2 video clips?

thx

Robert

MPEG1 is not a mac format, it is an official standard and plays on PCs too.

There is no reason the linked to DAT to MPEG convertor should crash the mac however Quicktime does seem very sensitive to dodgy MPEGS on CDRs (you know the sort).

However another DAT2MPEG convertor is available at: http://194.207.188.105/DAT2MPEG.sit

- CRAP!!!!!

I play .dat VCD files all the time just with QT4.1Pro.

If the Quicktime MPEG Extension has been corrupted from a crash or whatever, the QT installer won't know this and as it only installs what it thinks is missing, it will do nothing to help. The easiest thing to do is remove/trash all quicktime components from your extensions folder and from your desktop including the prefs(take note of your PRO registration), copy them to a zip if your being cautious and then download from scratch or even better, find a magazine cover-disk that has the full installer on it.

The MPEG extension details are as follows:

Wow Feathers, I like how you included the Pictures, this makes me want to spend a little more time on questions with people, I wonder if I can do better

What type of computer do you have? If it is a none G3 that could be the problem, I found that QT 4 on my older Mac made the movies take longer to startup and play (Dont say this is crap it is fact) But they did play, not as good as with QT 3 in system 9 or QT 4 with system 8. If you have any G3, this includes iMac then there should be no problem. Also if you use to play the movie and updated to QT 4, since it is a new app it might not be given enough memory, like if you had your old QT movie player set to a custom amount. increase that and see if that works, also put the movie on the HD and try and run it, if it is from a CD.

Good Luck and what is with QT not being able to play some MPEG, BULL!!
