If you like to download new movie trailers from Apples quicktime download site and watch them back anytime you want, your in for a suprise! If you download the new Lord Of The Rings trailer and try to export or save, it will not permit you to. Didnt make sense to me that I would wait an hour to download 15 megs only to be forced to throw it away when I was done watching it. So being the usual self I am, I was determined to find a way to save permanantly and view anytime I want to. So here is how I did it.

1: After trying to save and export to no avail I left the document open in movie player and I did a seach on my hard drive for "Lord" - NO HITS so I scratched my head and viola! I searched for "Temp" and there she be in the temp folder under the name QTPluginTemp89862 not sure what the significance of the last 5 numbers are.

2: I needed a scratch disk to save the temp file to in the event I lost everyting if I renamed it or moved it, so I transfered it from my iBook to my iMac through my lan.

3: Once in a safe place I tried to open the file but it didnt open because the creator resources were screwed up, rather than edit the file in res edit I tried to import, but no joy. So knowing that you can drag objects onto an open netscape window and force open that way I drug the temp file onto netscape, it then preceeded to act as if it was downloading and asked what application to open with, I chose Movie player and in 30 seconds it was playing.

4: I then renamed the temp file to my liking and it works time and time again by draging onto netscape.

Note: It may be possible to modify the creator resourse in res edit and avoid draging the file onto netscape. But Hey! Now I dont have to wait an hour to see a 1 minute trailer anymore! Im satisfied. I assume this procedure will work with any QT movie that does not permit saving.

I dont like somebody telling me what I can and cannot to with a file once its downloaded onto MY HARDDRIVE. So where there's a will there's a way.

Cheers!!
