why is it that the mac doesn't support mpeg-2? i have friends who use pcs that are watching movies in m2v format and svcds, and the quality is vastly superior to mpg1. what gives? are there any GOOD decoders out there for the mac? i've tried mpeg2decoder but it doesn't work.

Actually Apple's DVD player software plays MPEG-2 (obviously). It can even play the vobs copied from DVD. But not .m2v directly. However if you put the .m2v file into DVD Studio Pro (and I would assume iMovie), they will play it in apple's DVD player.

Any I think QuickTime 5 will play them, if not with an add-on codec.

You need a hacked version of the DVD player. Get it from:
http://www169.pair.com/lukifer/dvd.html

or
http://www.opuscc.com/download/index.shtml

Its the Apple DVD Player Supermod I think...

tried installing supermod... didn't work, i tried using the 2.3 code free version from http://www.opuscc.com/download/index.shtml as in the description on the site it says : Version 2.3 now has the ability to play DVD files
from any drive, similar to the Wired4DVD Player. but doesn't work either.

doesn't anyone have a mpeg-2 codec for qt?
