No it isn't!

It only runs under WMP6.3beta which is a total crock on the mac. When there's a DivX codec that runs native under quicktime (and you can export under QTPro), then you can say we have DivX for the mac!

Of course you can always go out and buy a PC and save yourself a lot of time waiting.

I assure you DivX Player does in fact make HEAVY use of QuickTime.

It also makes minor use of Media Player services.

An Extension based version is planned... but there are a few technical hurdles to be solved still.

The FACT is, Microsoft have an MPEG-4 implementation. It is not some bastardised version of MPEG-4. IT IS MPEG4!

GO and read the MPEG website sometime.

Apple does not CURRENTLY have an MPEG-4 implemenation. Shame on them. Although QuickTime is an almost complete MPEG4 implementation by itself. It is missing parts, such as the Video codec.

Take 1 part Media Player and 9 parts QuickTime and you have DivX Player for the Macintosh.

Try it, You might be surprised

i have tried mediaplayer, yuck, trashed it after one use... i'm not going to install/use it again just because of divx... and i might be wrong but i think Feathers meant a codec that uses QTPlayer and not that schmeediaplayer thing

Absolutely, why take 9 parts QT and 1 part WiMP? I just think think if I actually wanted such a thing, it should be 10 parts QT.

PS - Do you think I'm retarded? Of course it uses QT, I'd love to see an AV app/extn for the mac that doesn't, duh!

It sounds stux, like you may be closely linked to the project so in case you're not particularly Maccentric, I hope you appreciate the sentiments of a heavy mac QT exponent.

(BTW - I know somebody'll come back and say that the Indeo codecs and Heuris MPEG aren't 10 parts QT but they don't require WiMP either!)

Linked with the project

Yeah you could say that

If you had actually tried the thing you'd know I wrote it.

The point is, this is an early beta. I'm going to fix the audio problems, get export working, and then create an extension version. If you want to miss out for now. That's fine by me

But its your loss

my blind dogma prevents me from presenting myself as another statistic for MS, i will not download schmeediaplayer again

it is bad enough that i use IE as my browser of default and LIKE it

i have to draw the line somewhere... IE and no further!

I tried WiMP 6.3b (or whatever) and NOTHING would induce me to reinstalling it.

I have the greatest admiration for your efforts. BUT you may be expending you energies on something that some people may NEVER accept!

A bit like developing a method of bringing executed mass-murderers back to life - an amazing achievement but not something that's going to make you rich (or popular)!

When you have a non-WiMP version I'll be the first to try it out, I promise.

I guess I'm confused as to what WiMP has, that DivX needs, that QT doesn't?

Well, steal it! It's not like M$ hasn't done that! At least reverse engineer it or something! Apparently that's legal, given the VGS suit and all... not to mention that the gov't wouldn't mind a little anti-M$ activity in the business sector!

WMP is the single biggest PIECE OF **** to come out of Redmond! I refuse to ever look at it again, DIVX or not.

What's wrong with installing WMP? It might be a POS, but it doesn't seem to cause any instability/incompatibilities on my sysem.

What I want to know is: who's the bright marketing person who said, "I know! Let's give this new codec (DIVX) the same name as that failed DVD-video format from last year!"?

An interesting question especially as both products appear to serve the same or similar purpose. That is, to fragment an industry standard and create a proprietary one that can be excessively financially exploited!

Quicktime is on to a winner especially with Kodak licensing the technology. Sony VIAO's don't use WiMP either, they use a proprietary media player for all DV support.

Need I say more?
