I just bought a Sony DSC-P1 Digital camera which takes video. I have copied the videos to my G4/533 and used QuickTime Pro to convert to DV Format. When I open them in iMovies there is no sound. What am I doing wrong?

hi sue

the problem is that in converting mpeg1 to dv you lose the sound. i had the same problem with a sony s50 and a bunch of clips i tried to get into iMovie. there are soulutions out there, do a search for "Sparkle" in the forums and you'll see one possibility- i never bothered since it looked like too much work splitting video and audio and resyncing by hand. the other thing you might want to try is editing your clips with a PC (there are tons more affordable or free mpeg editors for the PC than for the Mac - and the supposed mpeg editing that QT5 is suppose to have has yet to materialize). another way of editing the clips may be to dump them to a vcr using the P1 rca cables then capturing the video by using a digital camcorder's analog or s video interface, then dumping it to your computer and imovie. you'll lose quality but mpeg is already not much to brag about in terms of video resolution. anyway, hope this helps in some way, good luck

(I'm a newbie at this stuff, so please excuse me if I say something stupid. ) Is the DV output of the camera even supposed to send the sound data? I wouldn't expect it to, but I certainly could be mistaken. Wouldn't you have to output the sound independently via the analog sound output connection, capture/digitize it into your computer via Quicktime Pro, and then import/re-sync it to the DV within iMovie? Extending upon this premise, maybe they expect you to use only the analog video/sound outputs if you wish to work with the sync'd video/sound as a single entity.

The file saved by the Sony does have the sound included and when I play it in Quicktime from the original format, the sound is surprizingly good.
