I myself am looking for a mpeg-2 codec for QT.
I will freely admit that my main use for the codec would be to copy dvd titles and export them in any format that I see fit. That said, let me say that I do not mean pirating dvd's. I just feel that I have the right to make copies of copyrighted works for my own personal use.
For example, my wife has an iBook. And between the 2 of us own a large dvd collection. It would be nice if I had the ability to create VCD's of her favorite movies that we already OWN. The whole issue of copying, CSS, DeCSS and the MPAA is sickening.

QT 5 WILL support full MPEG 1 and 2 encoding and decoding. It's slated to be released in the fall I believe or late summer. This is all according to Steve Jobs and WWDC.

QT 5 will have mpeg2 encoding courtesy of the Astarte people whom Apple bought recently. You will NOT however be able to copy DVD tracks (Steve's Hollywood friends wouldn't like it)

Ripping DVD tracks with QT are not the problem. That is already possible on just about every platform out there. The problem is converting the unencrypted mpeg-2 vid streams into a format that can be played back on machines without a dvd decoder.
Again, this is not about pirating. Major pirates could care less about the encryption. Doing a bit for bit copy grabs everything. The encryption is there for one reason, and one reason only. To restrict playback to only authorized players. I say BS.

Let's all remember that the upcoming release of QuickTime HAS NOT been announced as QuickTime 5, and Apple employees have publically stated on the QuickTime-Talk mailing list that the release Steve mentioned at WWDC HAS NOT been announced as v5, and is not referred to as such inside Apple.

True, the upcoming release will be 4.5, or so I've heard. I'm not sure that an MPEG-2 soft codec in QT will really be worth that much. Great for asymmetric ripping but RT Playback is STILL a bit of a pipe dream. My campaign would be for some dedicated codec hardware to take the pressure off the CPU.

Synchronisation anyone?

Just noticed MrT's comment. VCD's as opposed to DVD's are MPEG-1 320x240 (although the MPEG spec allows up to 352x288 - but not on vcd) try M.Pack 3.5.1e and Toast Deluxe 4.0
