iMovie, importing Quicktime?

I want to make a movie from thousands of digital camera pictures. iMovie slows way down after importing 500 or so 'clips', even though each clip is a single image. If I export my movie to a DV camcorder and then bring it back, it can treat the 500 frame movie as a single 'clip'.
The only problem is that I don't have a DV camcorder.
If I could export the movie into Quicktime and then import it back as a single 'clip', all would be well. I can't figure out how to do that.
This seems odd that iMovie can't import a Quicktime movie. Can it?

you can import quicktime movies into iMovie by first opening them with QuickTime 4 Player and then exporting the movie as a dv stream. you can import dv stream files directly into iMovie. cheers!

How odd. I went to the on-line Quicktime help and it indicates that there is an Export command on the File menu. There isn't in my install. I'm running player 4.0.1.

Do I need to download something else?

my guess is that you need QT Pro to export as dv stream.

Yes and no: QuickTime itself never loses capabilities by not being registered, only *QuickTime Player* (and the QuickTime browser plugin) is limited. So if you use a third-party player, such as Play it Cool 3.x, you have access to the export functions.

Ok. I now have the export command in Quicktime player. I export to a dv stream. It creates a file ending in .dv whose file type is dvc! and whose creator is TVOD. iMovie doesn't see that file in it's OPEN dialog box.
What am I doing wrong?

I don't think you are doing anything wrong. I have had the same problem that you are running into. I have not figured out a workaround. Does anyone else have any ideas?

To import new DV quicktime movies into iMovie, move the movie into the media folder. When you start iMovie it will report that media has been found and do you want to add it to the bookshelf. Say yes and it is there...
