In the card that came with my iMac DV, it says that the QuickTime Player can be used to play MP3 music files. I can't figure out how to do this. I have MP3 files that were sent from another computer, but the Player won't play them. Any help?

maybe those files were sent to you from a wintel box?

see these: http://www.macp3.net/about.html http://www.execpc.com/~krugd/MP3FileConverter.html

free: http://www.ctol.net/~ross/yamfc/

and there are more widgets to check out if you go to www.versiontracker.com and do a search for keyword 'mp3'

ADDENDUM:

Here I was trying not to second-guess what the user wants... indeed that are better MP3 players, Audion might be the best BUY, Grayamp might be the best FREE. http://www.digithought.net/software/grayamp/

Inscrutable as it may seem the user may WANT to use QTPlayer for reasons unknown.

QuickTime Player is a horrible app for playing mp3s... you're far better off looking at a 3rd party mp3 player. These include:

SoundJam MP - http://www.soundjam.com
Audion - http://www.panic.com/ppack/audion/
MACAST - http://www.macamp.net

One of the things I've noticed when dealing with mp3 is that sometimes a file(mp3) can be finicky about its player depending on where and how the file was obtained.
a quick fix to any problems you may have when trying to play mp3's is to first attempt to play it with "Soundapp". what this software does is it try's to play just about anything you put in it. If your mp3 is actually an mp3 soundapp will definetly let you know.
Soundapp is available at www-cs-students.stanford.edu/~franke/SoundApp or from www.download.com
Second Fix:
make sure that your mp3 isn't in a zipped format. just drag your file onto your stuffit expander icon and see what happens. either you'll get a message saying that "this file is not a valid format" or you'll unzip you file.
I bring this up because you said that the file was "sent" from another comp, which means some sort of compressing could have been involved.

stuffit expander is also available at www.download.com . oh and soundjam is my choice of mp3 player being that you can use the realizer plug in also available at www.soundjam.com which makes a huge difference in sound quality.
