Our "friends" at the MPAA and RIAA have officially introduced a bill in U.S. House of Representatives that would dramatically rewrite federal law to permit them to legally hack into peer to peer networks and create nearly unchecked electronic disruptions if a copyright holder has a "reasonable basis" to believe that piracy is occurring. Keep in mind that peer to peer networks are basically made almost entirely of end user computers, so they're asking for legal power to tap into YOUR computers, at their sole discretion, to cause disruptions. Think about that for a minute. Angry yet? You should be. Here's another link on this at Politechbot.com. And you can read the actual bill (in PDF format) here.

I saw that. What a bunch of paranoid nitwits. We're in a revolution here (or at least an evolution) and all they're doing is fighting it.

Agreed, this is scary. I tried to contact my rep in Washington on a couple issues, and I usually get some form letters back when I do so... however, the last time I sent one to him (on the topic of guns in cockpits... I'm not even touching that with a ten foot pole since this is an arts forum ) , the letter that was sent back to me was worded such that I don't even know if anyone even looked at it to get the side of the fence I was on. They seemed to imply that I was on one side of the fence of the issue, while I was very much on the opposite.
I hope our people in Washington can stop this... there's been some really scary legislation recently...
You'd think the RIAA would have something better to do, or a better way to handle this entire situation aside from royally pissing off every techie person out there.

Screw the RIAA - I am voting with my pocketbook and never, ever purchasing another music CD.
