Running 9.2.1 on one of my macs. When I insert a data CD, it doesn't show up on the desktop. I can hear the CD drive spin up, but nothing appears. If I reboot and hold down the "C" key, the computer will boot to the CD and the CD icon will appear.

I have tried running NDD, DiskWarrior, and rebuilding the desktop/zapping thew PRAM but none of this has helped.

Any ideas on how to resolve this?

Hiya,

What make of Mac do you have?

Are ALL your data discs doing this, or just one disc in particular?

Have you checked out Mac Help / Disks / Problems Using Disks and checked the extensions listed are active?

BTW; I have a Powerbook, and had the same problem. DVD's and audio CD's recognised AOK, but not 2 particular data CD's.

In my case, the 2 data CD's were brand-new-out-of-the-box games, but nope, my Mac couldn't read them! Cleaning them both with alcohol fixed the problem. Couldn't believe that was the fix to the problem as the discs were spanking-shiny new!

You might also want to check the lazer on the CD drive itself. If it gets dirty, it can miss some data.

Maybe a stupid question, but just to be sure... Is the Apple CD/DVD driver extension enabled (see also another post above)? If it isn't, the CDs won't show up on the desktop, of course - but, then, if the drive spins up it isn't probably due to that...
