After I updated to Mac OS 9.1 I get the following message:
Software needed for the USB device "SoundSticks" is not available. Would you like to look for the software on the Internet?

If I click OK, Software Update works for a while and then quits without any message.

I used the SoundSticks with a Pismo 500 and did not have any problem updating to 9.1
There was no specific software to install for the SoundSticks. Just plug them in.
I agree with mac_md: zap the pram. also rebuild the desktop.
