I cannot see the Finder in the background (icons on the desktop, etc.) when an
application is open. I either have to go to the finder pulldown menu, or use the shareware utility QuikHide to "toggle" back and forth. I replaced QuikHide, but that did not make this annoying problem go away. I also tried trashing the Finder Prefs and the Apperance Prefs, but that had no effect either.

Anyone have an idea on fixing this?

Open the General Controls control panel. Make sure "Show Desktop in Background" is checked. The only other explanation would be that you're using some 3rd party extension to automatically hide the Finder.
