crash w/modem and 8.6

Under MacOS 8.5 I've been able to connect to the internet just fine using a modem, but when I upgraded to 8.6, the computer would crash when attempting to access the internet (after a connection had been established).

I have 8.5 installed on my machine right now, so I can still connect, but is this a bug in the OS or just the modem? I have an iMac, revision A. I just recently downloaded that iMac modem update that was released last year; might that fix the problem?

If there were any earlier threads on this subject, point 'em out for me. I'm not sure where to begin searching.

sounds like you need to delete the Remote Access pref's folder

and if that does not clear the issue, try deleting the Internet pref's file
