Ok, so years ago Apple gave the permission for users to download and use OS 7.5.5 (I believe) for free. It's been years since..and still no sign of 7.6, or even 8. Here at the shop I'm not allowed to install any OS (for free) for the customer that can still be purchased (OS 9, and obviously X), and OS 8 just seems to be a grey area. I wonder when we'll see OS 8 for free? Is it's foundation too close to 9?

Yes. Nothing higher than 755 will be free until X really kicks in, and maybe not even then.

I'm sure if you looked really hard (or even using programs like Carracho, if necessary), you can find it. However, OS 9 is so much like OS 8 that you don't really need it like you would OS 7 (as OS 7 operates completely different than any future operating system).

Finding the OSes aren't a problem. Here at an Authorized Service center, we get cds from Apple with every Mac OS on them. My question was simply why hasn't Apple released 7.6 or any further update for free? It's been years since Apple has released 7.5.5 (which in my mind was an excellent move by Apple (you don't see MS releasing Win 3.1 for free do you?)). It's just a legal issue as to how much can we give away?

I'd love to have 7.6 (and then already free upgrade to 7.6.1) for free since being the tightwad I am, I don't want to spend the $20 or so but I'm doing OK with 755, it got a pretty bad rap but actually works very well for me. Moving to X requires new hardware (torun properly/optimally) and afterall Apple is hardware company first, software co. second.

Going to get a shiney new Flat-Panel iMac in next 3 weeks and will of course be running X on that.

Great choice of a computer to upgrade your hardware to.
