Ever since I installed extra RAM in my iMAC my monitor has been acting strangeley. Presumably someting shifted when I turned the iMAC onto its' screen. With the result that often the computer starts with a very dark or completely black screen. Obviously I can't work with such a screen and too many times I need to use the reset button to restart the machine - which is something I hate having to do.
So I figured that if I could programme a function key to do the shutdown for me I could save my HD a lot of grief. All I need is a script that I can link to the f-key. Does anybody know how to write such a script? (Or is there an existing keyboard shortcut that I don't know about?)

Keyboard shortcut: Control+Power, and push Enter at the beep on Mac OS 9. In Mac OS X, it still works, but there's no beep.

Or, use this script:

tell app "Finder"
shut down
end tell

Save it as an application and assign it to a F-key.
