My Cd player stopped working, the sound control panel keeps crashing when I try to set the alert sounds, and the internet controle panel is crashing as well!
Also, how can I keep the software from automatically trying to connect to the internet at startup?

All this stuff happened when I downgrade from MacOs 8.6 to MacOs9...
now my g4 is about as stable as an aol dial-up cnnection? anyone know what's going on here? any suggestions welcomed

I have no trouble with control panels on my Yikes 400, but I did have the problem with the modem dialling out repeatedly when I didn't need it to, including on startup.

The fix was to trash ALL the Preference files. I never found out which one was to blame, and because this happened very early after installing Mac OS 9, I wasn't losing anything important. Removing the Preferences folder from the System Folder stopped the problem dead, though.
