THe TCPIP CDev has the option of loading TCP/IP only when needed. This appears to be the default. Wouldn't it better for me to uncheck this box?

Sure would

If you have a permanent connection, like xDSL or Cable, uncheck that box!

That is correct - while it would work fine, loading and unloading the IP stack would expose the Mac OSes horrible memory leak - after a while, your memory would be very fragmented and the OS would be using an ungodly amount of RAM.

I believe under MacOS9 and later, if your connection is ethernet, its always loaded, regardless of what the box says.
