I've finally noticed a problem with OS 9.1. Overall its really floored me with its stability, so I'm not complaining (too much)...
It seems that with 9.1, I cannot turn down the audio output level as low as with 9.0.4. Even with the main volume slider set to its lowest position that still gives sound, the output level is much higher. I use the headphone jack to connect my Cambridge soundworks speakers, and now while playing CDs I'm getting distortion on the speakers (with the speakers set at a conversation-level volume). I think what's happening is that the speaker's amplifier is getting too high a signal from the powermac, and so it distorts. The speakers are also set to almost their lowest volume, while before 9.1 they were set quite a bit higher to achieve the same sound output level.
Interestingly, the "check signal level" meter is in the yellow or red when playing a CD. The gain is not adjustable when the source is set to CD.
So I'm at a loss. All I can think of is to get Soundblaster and use line-level outputs to my speakers. This would probably fix the problem, but what do I do for now?
