Very irritating problem.

I bought my DVD iMac in Japan. I run both Eng-Int 9.0.4 and Japanese OS 9.0. In Japan, Software Update worked perfectly. But in Australia, Software Update fails every time (under either system).

It connects, says "Checking for Updates" and the progress bar whizzes by for a fraction of a second before freezing. About 10 seconds later the Mac locks up and I have to restart.

When I came to Australia I ran the little modem program on the Utilities CD to change the modem from Japan to Australia setting. All modem software works fine except for Update CP. Why???? ? Any thoughts gratefully received.

delete the Software Updates Pref file, the Software Update Logs file, and the Updatable Items file... restart and rebuild desktop

I have been out of town for six weeks. When I returned about a week ago I experienced the same annoying problem as Binkie. Even with help from apple tech, the problem persisted until I tried wlonh's solution. Now it is working perfectly. Once again, I thank you, honorable moderator!
