MacOS 9.0.4 lockups

I have been having problems with MacOS 9.0.4 locking up my computer. Everything is fine for a while and then when I double click something on the desktop that needs to open, such as a folder of HD, the thing locks up tight as a drum and I have to give it the three finger salute.

Runnning MacOS 9.0.4 with all current updates, on a PowerBook Pismo 500Mhz.. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
