iMac HD stopping

	I dont know if this is an OS related proble or not but when I do something like opening a program or emptying the trash or basically anything, the hard drive makes a small noise and stops for 1 second and then whines a little then everything is fine. it is really annoying since it slows me down. Is this an OS problem and how can I fix it?
