OS 9.1 & Script Editor / Smile crashes?

I get many machine-freezing crashes when using Script Editor (Apple) or Smile 1.8 (3rd party freeware editor). I have OS 9.1 and have tried AppleScript versions 1.5.5 and 1.6

Has anyone identified any particular AppleScript conflicts? I see lots of similar problems reported but no solutions. I can't go to OS 9.2.1 on this legacy PPC.

Any suggestions for other free or cheap AppleScript editors - that actually work?
