ASLM Preferences, question about...?

I know that it is the preference file for the Apple Shared Library Manager, but what exactly is stored there? I have been told this is a file that should be trashed if you are having problems with networking (along with TCP/IP prefs, AppleShare PREP, etc). What programs would be affected (need possible reconfiguring, etc)? What programs utilize this preference file?
