Keeping plenty of room for programs to use your HD as a scratch disks for various cache is a good thing.
Just keep as much shite as you can from cluttering the HD, I'd recommend always staying over 500MB at the very least.

I constantly run with less than 5 megs of HD space.
On your SYSTEM partition, just make sure there is enough space for apps to write their prefs; if you have zero K available, then you'll crash if ICQ tries to write a message to its history, or AIM tries to write a log, etc.
I recommend leaving 30 megs free; though I often break that rule.
