Modifying Macintalk ?

Is there a way to modify what Macintalk will convert from text to speech? I'd really like to turn off the translation of '>' to "greater than" but could find no way to modify anything except minimal voice speed settings.

i think different applications can modify how things are spoken, but I'm not sure about system level settings

That'd be a matter of finding the right strings, perhaps you could do that with ResEdit depending on how they're stored...
Its worth a try. If I remember I'll give it a go.
