I have read several times/places, including Connectix's site, that under OS9, I do not need the following extensions installed, and in fact that they may cause problems:

Epson USBPrintClass 1
Epson USBPrintClass 2
Epson USBPrintClass 3
Epson USBPrintClass A

When I remove them, I can no longer use my Epson Monitor3 program to clean the cartridges or check ink levels. That doesn't sound like they're not necessary to me.

Then, I have read several times/places that I do not need the Imation SuperDisk drivers (USBSuperDiskClassDriver & USBSuperDiskUTDriver). However, without them installed, my Superdisk drive doesn't work. Again, that doesn't sound like they're not necessary to me.

What gives?! I like to minimize using extensions that are "not needed" to minimize conflicts, so I would like to remove these if they are not needed. Why do so many places say that these are not needed with OS 9, yet my stuff doesn't work without them?

(I am running an iMac/266, OS 9.1, 160MB RAM, and the latest drivers of for the above hardware.)

Trust the force, SM.

If your machine wants the extensions, give them to it. I think most users--me, at least--work fine without them. But computers work in mysterious ways.
And that's true too.--Shakespeare, King Lear

Hi SM,

Many USB drivers are built into the Mac OS. Because of this, it's often not necessary to install additional drivers. For example, I have a new iomega zip drive. I simply connected it to the Mac without installing any of the software that came with it, and it works great. However, as you might expect, Apple's USB drivers don't cover 100% of the USB devices out there. I also have an Epson printer and I too had to add Epson's drivers.

Reading Apple's TIL article #60394 might be of interest to you. However, you don't need the Mass Storage Support mentioned there with OS 9 or above.

Hope this helps,

Art

The SuperDisk drive is handled by Apples Mass Storage Device driver.
I just keep my Epson drivers all there, it works, and I can't be bothered rebooting so many times to see which ones I need and which I don't...
